Earth Fair 2010

Earth Fair 2010 will be celebrated on Thursday, April 22nd after school in the Poultney High School gym.

It’s getting to be that time of year again. Last year we had a rockin’ Earth Fair celebration that drew about 300 people from all over the area to Poultney High School! This year’s Earth Fair theme is Old Ways, New Days. We will be looking at the practices of yesterday to learn how to be more environmentally sustainable and conscientious in our behaviors today.  There are many creative ways to get involved with the Earth Fair. If you would like to participate and need help brainstorming ideas, please let me know!

Coach Sawyer Praises 8th Grade Basketball Team at PHS

Words from Coach Nick Sawyer:  If you see any of the 8th grade boys’ basketball team, please extend your congratulations and praise to them on an incredible seasons. They wrapped up their season on February 20th at Proctor High School playing in the championship game of the “Final Buzzer” tournament and walked away with another 1st place finish. They finished the season 12-4 with 2 tournament championships. They have all worked very hard and showed a lot of dedication to the game this season. They improved their work ethic, their basketball IQ and their abilities. At the start of the season the team was a mixed group of students that enjoyed playing basketball. They have matured into a family of athletes that can call themselves basketball players. The coaches are very proud of these young gentlemen and everyone else should be as well. These young student-athletes represent a very bright future for the Poultney Community. (Attached is a picture of the team, courtesy of Al Jackson).

The American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program

The American Legion Oratorical Contest exists to develop deeper knowledge and appreciation for the U.S. Constitution among high school students. The 70-year-old program presents participants with an academic speaking challenge that teaches important leadership qualities, the history of our nation’s laws, the ability to think and speak clearly, and an understanding of the duties, responsibilities, rights and privileges of American citizenship. The overall national contest winner gets an $18,000 scholarship. Second place takes home $16,000, and third gets $14,000. Each state winner who is certified into and participates in the national contest’s first round receives a $1,500 scholarship. Those who advance past the first round receive an additional $1,500 scholarship. The American Legion’s National Organization awards the scholarships, which can be used at any college or university in the United States. High school students under age 20 are eligible. Competition begins at the post level and advances to a state competition. Legion department representatives certify one winner per state to the national contest, where department winners compete against each other in two speaking rounds. The contest caps off with a final round that decides the three top finishers. Speaking subjects must be on some aspect of the U.S. Constitution, with some emphasis on the duties and obligations of citizens to our government. Speeches are eight to 10 minutes long; three- to five-minute speeches on an assigned topic also are part of the contest

Vermont History Day
