POULTNEY’S STATE LINE BAND BEGINS ITS 23RD SEASON,
by Janice B. Edwards, freelance writer
Do you enjoy
band music? Are you a musician looking to share your talents with
others for seasonal concerts in Poultney and the vicinity? The State
Line Band, which is now beginning its 23rd year welcome
you to join with them.
Instrumentalists of several genres as well as drummers are needed.
William D.
“Doc” Williams, who refers to himself as the “manager and
instigator” of the State Line Band, said that the band began its
life as a drum corps to accompany Poultney’s local color guard and
fire department at parade events. After their first appearance, it
grew into a drum and bugle corp. The next year they were hoping to
have a brass ensemble too when a clarinetist approached the group to
play. Since that time, they welcome all band musicians to join with
them.
State Line
Band, which began its life as a marching band, also now enjoys
riding on floats at parades. They have performed in many events in
Poultney, Wells, Rupert, Middletown Springs, Fair Haven and Rutland
. The largest events which they have performed in are the Loyalty
Day parades in Rutland , a 14-division parade that is held each year
on the first Sunday of May. In Poultney, they play on Memorial Day
weekend, July 4th and Veteran’s Day. And, they play in
nearby Granville , New York . Doc said that the performance
schedule for 2013 is growing with events in several other area
communities.
Doc said that
over the years, many instruments have also been donated to State
Line Band. Those are passed on to interested musicians not having
their own. Doc said come join with the band even if you don’t have
an instrument to use. He is always looking for instruments to fix
up. He said he is “always in the market for good, used horns” for
the band. Over the years, some instruments have been donated to the
band by older citizens no longer needing them. Doc said that in
addition to the instruments having been used by State Line Band,
many instruments that have come to the band have also been donated
to the area’s public schools for use of the elementary and middle
schools music programs. Many of those youngsters have later become
active with State Line Band. Anyone who may have or know about idle
used instruments please be in touch with Doc. He will be glad to
hear from you.
Practice date
is scheduled for Monday,
May 20th at
7:00 p.m.
at the Monroe ’s on Hampshire
Hollow Road,
in the east section of Poultney , Vermont . Band musicians of all
ages are encouraged to attend. Doc said they look forward to
another season of band in the region.
